When I was around 19/20 I moved to California with a friend to share an apartment with her, so she could be closer to her boyfriend (he was in school). I did fine. I paid my bills, and had a nice job to boot. I was very capable, and I knew it.
My oldest child is 17. Next year he will be a senior. I don't think he is old enough to go anywhere, yet I was only 19 when I moved far away from home. I know what my mom is gonna say, something like I felt the same way you do blah, blah, blah... But it's different! :)
So this is how things change. When I was young my mind worked faster, or maybe I was more capable, but now I see all of the "things" that have to be done, or can happen. So I guess I've become a full fledged mom. My boy will be alright, and if he's not he will learn valuable life lessons. But more than likely he will be fine. Anyway, I still have at least one more year! :)

I think at 19 we all felt very capable and mature. I think I feel less capable now in some areas than I ever have. I think it's partly because some of the things I do at work require abilities that are not my forte. And it's partly because as I've gotten older my brain has changed and made some things harder for me.
As for your son leaving home, I think it's never easy when a child leaves home. As parents we work at preparing them to get ready to leave us and then it's hardest on us when it happens. For them it's great!
I was 19 when I moved out and I really did feel like an adult. Now anyone under 25 seems like a kid to me!
I also look back and think...I did not know nothing! I sure thought I did though..LOL
I left for college when I was 17 and had some anxiety, but did all right. God placed me in a wonderful Christian College that helped me build strong foundations for life.
I'm sure your son will do fine and learn some valuable life lessons - we all do :)
I don't even remember preparing my children to be on their own! But somehow they did fine.
Just be glad if he does leave in a couple of years. There is a trend these days for kids to stay home mooching of mom and dad until they get married at age 35!
